Isabel Martin of New Tech High Wins Soroptimist’s Violet Richardson Award

Isabel Martin of New Tech High wins S I Napa’s Violet Richardson Award

Soroptimist International of Napa annually awards the Violet Richardson Award to a teenage girl for her volunteer action such as fighting drugs, crime and violence, cleaning up the environment and working to end discrimination and poverty.   It is named for the first club President of Soroptimist in 1921, Violet Richardson who believed in personal responsibility and the motto, “It’s what you do that counts.”  Each club in the district of Founder region selects an awardee.

Soroptimist International of Napa’s awardee for the Violet Richardson Award is an exceptional young lady, Isabel Martin, a senior at New Tech High. She started “Schools for Climate Action”.  She was inspired by other students and the global movement, obtained a school district resolution, has the Superintendent on board and now the group meets with the local County Climate Action Committee and elected officials regarding climate.

While Napa’s “Dream Awards” ceremony in late March was canceled because of the Corona Virus, Isabel will be receiving a $500 check from S I of Napa for herself, and $500 will be donated to the Napa County Resource Conservation District on her behalf.  The Soroptimist Region Conferenced scheduled for early May was also canceled, however the Napa club has been informed that Isabel is also the District Winner (out of 13 clubs) for the Violet Richardson Award and that she will receive an additional $500!  This will be beneficial as Isabel reports that she will be attending U.C. Berkley for an Environmental Science degree.

Soroptimist is a global volunteer organization that provides women and girls with access to the education and training they need to achieve economic empowerment.  Soroptimist began in 1921 with Violet Richardson as the first club President in Alameda, CA and now is a worldwide organization.

The Napa club was chartered in 1939, and current President is Leigh Krieger of Minuteman Press.  S I Napa normally meets the 2nd and 3rd Tuesday for lunch at Embassy Suites and the 4th Tuesday for an evening meeting at various locations. Email for membership information.
